Kenyan President William Ruto, leading the African Union (AU), reported that conflicts in Africa cost $18 billion annually and displace millions. The AU currently supports 35 million internally displaced persons, 8.9 million refugees, and 1.1 million asylum seekers. Between April and June 2024, 1,000 terrorism incidents caused 4,818 deaths. Ruto stressed the urgent need to revitalize the AU's security architecture and presence in regional conflicts to support the continent's development.
