Volunteer group helps Pacific newts cross road safely with grant for safer passage studies.

A volunteer group in California, the Chileno Valley Newt Brigade, helps Pacific newts safely cross a road to reach their spawning ground during migration from late fall to March. The team of about 10 volunteers uses flashlights and walkie-talkies to guide the newts and other small creatures across the road. With a $75,000 grant, they study road modifications like under-road culverts to ensure safer passage.
