Tenants in three low-rise apartment buildings in Victoria, Canada, are urging the provincial government to help preserve their homes as affordable rentals. The buildings, set to be redeveloped into four new residential buildings by Belmont Properties, house many elderly and single-parent residents with fixed incomes who can't afford rising rents. The tenants, who formed the Gordreau Tenant Group, are exploring a co-op model to save their homes. The provincial Rental Protection Fund, which buys existing rentals to protect them from development, is not considering these properties for purchase.
