Six-year-old springer spaniel Poppy has become a groundbreaking oil spill detector in northern Ontario. In tests at the Experimental Lakes Area, Poppy successfully located submerged oil at various depths and under ice, outperforming current technologies. This research, set to be published in a peer-reviewed journal, could lead to dogs becoming a reliable tool for detecting oil spills in challenging environments, including the Arctic.
