Despite cold weather, experts caution on Lake Poygan and Winnebago for safe ice fishing.
During Northeast Wisconsin's cold spell, ice fishing and sturgeon spearing are popular on Lake Poygan and Lake Winnebago. Lake Poygan has about 17 inches of ice away from open water spots, while Lake Winnebago has 15-17 inches, both considered safe for ice activities. Don Herman, an ice monitoring expert, cautions against nighttime and foggy travel and stresses that ice is never fully safe. Local fishing clubs provide updates on social media.
