In an effort to make Indore, India's cleanest city, beggar-free, police have filed a first information report against an unknown person for giving alms to a beggar. The act is punishable by up to one year in jail or a fine of up to Rs 5,000 under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The city is part of a pilot project aiming to eliminate begging in 10 cities nationwide, with rewards of Rs 1,000 for tips leading to arrests.
