Japan develops satellite system to quickly assess earthquake damage using before-and-after imagery.

Japan's space agency, JAXA, and Kumamoto Prefecture are developing a program to estimate earthquake damage using satellite imagery. The system, expected to be operational in a few years, compares pre- and post-quake images to assess building damage within 2-3 hours and works at night and in bad weather. It will use data from the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake to improve accuracy and aims to assist in disaster response.
