Zoo Knoxville mourns the loss of 47-year-old gorilla Kowali, who died from heart disease.

Zoo Knoxville has announced the death of Kowali, a beloved Western lowland gorilla who was 47. Kowali, a mother of four, had lived at the zoo since 2013 and was born in 1978 at Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo. Dr. Andrew Cushing discovered she had irreversible heart disease. Zoo Knoxville CEO Bill Street praised Kowali's role in gorilla conservation efforts. The zoo now has five Western lowland gorillas.
