NASA discovers Sun's flickering loops precede solar flares, aiding space weather prediction.
NASA researchers have found that coronal loops in the Sun's atmosphere flicker before major solar flares, using the Solar Dynamics Observatory.
This flickering, observed in extreme ultraviolet light, occurs a few hours before a flare and could help predict dangerous space weather, protecting astronauts and technology from charged particle emissions.
The findings were presented at the American Astronomical Society meeting.
