After a 7.3-magnitude earthquake hit Port Vila, Vanuatu on December 17, 2024, 200 businesses in the city's Central Business District remain locked down due to safety concerns. The area is now deserted, with only security and essential services present. The Australian government has committed $6.1 million to restore essential services, and international engineers are set to assess and work on the damaged buildings. The quake affected around 116,000 people.
