Queen Elizabeth II was unaware for years that her art advisor was a Soviet spy, newly declassified files reveal.
Newly declassified MI5 files show Queen Elizabeth II was not informed for nearly a decade that her art advisor, Anthony Blunt, was a Soviet spy. Blunt confessed in 1964 to passing secrets to the KGB since the 1930s but the Queen was only told in the 1970s. Officials kept it from her to avoid adding to her concerns. Blunt was publicly exposed as a spy in 1979 by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and died in 1983 without being prosecuted.
