New study finds monogamy most stable among bird mating systems, impacting species survival.

Researchers from Rice University have found that among bird mating systems, monogamy is the most stable and supports better parental care, while lekking, involving elaborate male displays, is also stable but rare. Resource-defense polygamy, where males defend resources to attract mates, was found to be less stable and more prone to revert to monogamy, affecting species survival. The study, which analyzed over 6,620 bird species, provides new insights into how mating systems impact species evolution and survival.
