BMO Capital Markets pays over $40 million to settle SEC charges over misleading mortgage bond sales.

BMO Capital Markets has agreed to pay over $40 million to settle charges from the SEC over supervision failures at its agency bond desk. The SEC alleged that BMO failed to monitor employees selling mortgage-backed bonds with misleading descriptions. BMO neither admitted nor denied the charges but will pay $19.4 million in disgorgement, $2.2 million in interest, and a $19 million penalty.
