Researchers find petrochemicals, not sunlight, cause winter ozone pollution in Lanzhou, China.

Researchers from Hong Kong Polytechnic University found that petrochemical industries are the main cause of severe wintertime ozone pollution in Lanzhou, China. Contrary to common belief, the study shows that ozone forms through a reaction involving alkenes without sunlight, with trans/cis-2-butene and propene as major contributors. Reducing alkenes or nitrogen oxides could lower ozone levels, which harm respiratory health, causing inflammation and asthma symptoms.
