A low-level member of Edmonton's Redd Alert gang, Kody Shortneck, was sentenced to 13 years in prison for manslaughter. Shortneck shot Thomas Russell after being coerced by senior gang members, who threatened him with violence. The court heard that Redd Alert recruits vulnerable Indigenous individuals and operates under a strict code of violence. Despite his coercion, Shortneck was condemned for his actions.
