German SMEs face a growing succession crisis as aging owners consider closing their businesses.

German small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face a growing succession crisis, with about 231,000 owners considering closing their businesses by 2025, up 41% from last year. The main challenge is finding successors, and the situation is expected to worsen, with an estimated 310,000 affected businesses in the next three to five years. The crisis is linked to the aging of business owners, with 39% aged 60 or older, compared to 30% of the general population.
