Sainsbury's announces 5% pay rise for 118,000 workers, exceeding UK's minimum wage plans.

Sainsbury's, the UK's second-largest supermarket, announced a 5% pay rise for its 118,000 hourly-paid workers following a successful Christmas period, which saw strong sales in party foods and alcohol. The pay increase will bring the minimum annual pay for a full-time worker outside London to £24,026 by August, ahead of the government's planned minimum wage hike. Despite the sales growth, Sainsbury's stock fell 2.5% as it did not raise its profit forecasts.
