Cedar Rapids reports a 16% drop in violent crimes in 2024, but sees a spike in shoplifting.

In 2024, Cedar Rapids saw a significant drop in violent crime, with incidents decreasing by 16% compared to the five-year average. The city credited this to community partnerships, technology like license plate cameras, and police efforts. However, there were increases in minor crimes such as retail shoplifting and fraud. Police Chief David Dostal noted that while violent crime and property crime rates declined, the number of shoplifting cases spiked by over 50%. Despite improvements, weapons-related crimes also rose.
