Cambodia's Crane Rice initiative helps stabilize sarus crane population by expanding safe habitat and involving more farmers.

Cambodia's vulnerable sarus crane population has stabilized at 178 birds in 2024, facing threats like habitat loss and climate change. To protect the species, the Ministry of Environment and NatureLife Cambodia launched the Crane Rice initiative, involving farmers near Anlung Pring who grow native rice without chemicals, leaving part of their yield for cranes. Since 2019, the project has grown, with the number of participating farmers increasing from 40 to 120 households and the safe habitat expanding from 219 to 386 hectares.
