Opossum captured in Hawaii store; animal euthanized for rabies testing due to non-native status and disease risks.

An opossum was captured in a big-box store in Kona, Hawaii, and euthanized for rabies testing by the Hawaii Department of Agriculture. Found on January 4th, this is the second opossum caught in recent months. Opossums, not native to Hawaii, can carry diseases and parasites. The Department urges the public to report any sightings of illegal animals to the PEST HOTLINE at 808-643-PEST.
