In 2024, Japan recorded the third-lowest number of traffic-related deaths on record, with 2,663 fatalities, marking a 15% decrease from the previous year. Tokyo had the highest number of fatalities with 146. Notably, drivers aged 65 and older accounted for 56.8% of the deaths, an increase of 47 from the prior year. The Japanese government aims to reduce traffic fatalities to under 2,000 by 2025.
