Iraqi experts work to restore over 35,000 ancient artifacts from ISIS-damaged Nimrud site.

Iraqi archaeologists are painstakingly reassembling over 35,000 fragments of ancient artifacts from the UNESCO-listed site of Nimrud, which was severely damaged by ISIS in 2014. The site, once a key part of the Assyrian empire, includes bas-reliefs, sculptures, and decorated slabs. The restoration project, started in 2018 and interrupted by the pandemic, is expected to take a decade to complete and requires international support.
