On Jan. 3, 2025, Cougar Helicopters' Flight 881, carrying 13 people, returned safely to St. John's after a suspected lightning strike at 5,000 feet. The aircraft, operated by Cenovus Energy, was escorted by a search and rescue team. No injuries were reported. Inspections of other nearby helicopters did not find any signs of lightning strikes. Cenovus Energy and Cougar Helicopters are investigating the incident.
