Study finds sex differences in newborns' brain structures, with males having more white matter and females more grey matter.
A recent study by the Autism Research Centre involving over 500 newborns found sex differences in brain structure present at birth. Male infants had larger brain volumes but, when adjusted, female infants had more grey matter, which processes information, while males had more white matter, which connects neurons. These differences, the largest study of its kind, aim to better understand neurodiversity, including conditions like autism.
