Rotorua, New Zealand, plans to launch a weekly food and green waste collection to halve landfill waste.

Rotorua, New Zealand, is launching a weekly kerbside collection for food and green waste, starting July 1, 2026, aiming to halve landfill waste and reduce carbon footprint by 80%. This $2.45 million annual service, partly funded by the Ministry for the Environment, will exclude rural areas. It will process waste into energy and fertilizer at a facility in Reporoa, offsetting costs through reduced landfill expenses.
