Five civilian army volunteers in Burkina Faso were killed in an attack by armed groups near the Togo and Ghana borders. The victims were part of the Volunteers for the Defence of the Fatherland, working with the army. The attack sparked a local protest that blocked the main highway. Since 2012, jihadist violence originating in Mali has spread to Niger and Burkina Faso, causing around 26,000 deaths and displacing nearly two million people.
