Yellow taxis in Kolkata, a city symbol, face phase-out by 2026 due to a 2008 court order on vehicle age.

Around 1,500 yellow taxis in West Bengal, India, will be phased out by the end of next year due to a 2008 court order banning commercial vehicles older than 15 years. Taxi unions argue many are still road-worthy, but the government plans to replace them with BS 6 compliant new models and is offering loan facilitation to owners. These yellow taxis have been a symbol of Kolkata since 1962.
