Taiwanese experts propose raising the drinking age to 21 to curb health risks and costs.

Taiwanese medical experts are advocating for raising the legal drinking age from 18 to 21 to reduce health risks linked to alcohol, which includes over 200 diseases. A survey revealed that 14.1% of junior high and 30.6% of senior high students have recently consumed alcohol. Raising the drinking age could lower alcohol consumption and drunk driving incidents, similar to findings in the US. Alcohol-related diseases cost Taiwan’s National Health Insurance NT$5.3 billion annually, with total costs reaching NT$53 billion.
