Researchers gauge economic impact of hiking trails in New Mexico, revealing significant visitor spending.

Montana-based Headwaters Economics developed a new method to measure the economic impact of trail usage in western New Mexico. Using infrared cameras, cell phone data, and fitness apps, they found nearly 83,000 trail visits in Cibola and McKinley counties over six months, with out-of-area visitors spending almost $2 million in a year. The approach could be applied to other Western communities.
