Lake Michigan's water level has dropped below its long-term average, falling about 20 inches since July. Lakes Michigan-Huron usually hit their yearly low in February. Currently, the lakes are 40 inches below their all-time high in 1986 and 24 inches above their low in 2014. Though cycles of high and low levels are normal, a long-term decline trend could negatively impact commerce by requiring more harbor dredging.
