Lee Lakeman, a founding member of one of Canada's first women's shelters in Woodstock, has passed away at 78. She opened the Oxford County Women's Emergency Centre in 1974, initially funded by community donations, and later received support from Oxford County and the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. Lakeman left the shelter in 1978 to join Rape Relief in Vancouver, continuing her advocacy for women's rights and safety. She was remembered as a fierce advocate for women's rights and safety.
