Ghana grants citizenship to 524 Black Americans through its citizenship program, "Year of the Return."

Ghana has granted citizenship to about 524 Black Americans through its "Year of the Return" program, launched in 2019 to mark 400 years since the first African slaves arrived in the U.S. The initiative, now extended as "Beyond the Return," also includes members from Canada, the UK, and Jamaica. Many diaspora members move to Ghana seeking a sense of belonging and safety, away from U.S. racial tensions, while connecting with their African heritage.
