Experts caution that using hot water to de-ice car windscreens can cause cracking; safer methods are advised.

Experts warn against using hot water in bags or kettles to de-ice car windscreens, as it may cause cracking. Instead, they recommend using a spray-on de-icer, a vinegar and water solution, or covering the windscreen with cardboard to prevent ice. Some suggest using a car's heater and windscreen fan set to high to melt ice from inside the vehicle, though this method may waste fuel. The AA warns against leaving only a small part of the windscreen clear, known as "portholing," as it can be dangerous and illegal.
