The Syrian civil war has claimed over 528,500 lives since 2011, with more than half the deaths in 2024 being civilians. The conflict, which began with pro-democracy protests, has involved international and jihadist actors and led to the fall of President Bashar al-Assad's regime in December 2024. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also confirmed over 64,000 deaths in regime prisons due to torture and poor conditions.
