Bats save energy on long migrations by flying ahead of storms, a behavior newly discovered by scientists.

Scientists tracking 71 common noctule bats found that these bats use warm fronts of storms to save energy during long migrations across Europe. By attaching ultra-lightweight sensors, the researchers discovered the bats fly before storms, using favorable winds to reduce energy use. This behavior was previously unknown and may help in conserving migratory bat species threatened by climate change.
