Women directors' share in top films slightly rose, but racial diversity fell, study shows.

A 2024 study by USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative shows women directors made up 13.4% of the top 100 films, slightly up from 12.1% in 2023, indicating a plateau in progress. Underrepresented racial groups comprised 24.1% of directors, down from a 2021 peak of 28.6%. Despite higher critical scores, women of color face fewer opportunities, with no major studio having released 10 films by them in the last 18 years.
