Nicaraguan Bishop Carlos Herrera expelled for criticizing local mayor; now seeks refuge in Guatemala.
Catholic Bishop Carlos Herrera, president of Nicaragua's Bishops' Conference, was expelled from Nicaragua by President Daniel Ortega's government for criticizing a local mayor. Herrera, now in Guatemala, thanked the Catholic Church there for support and called for prayers for Nicaragua during the 2025 Jubilee Mass. Five out of Nicaragua's nine bishops remain in the country.
