Nearly 1.3 million in Puerto Rico face New Year's Eve blackout; power may take two days to restore.

A massive power outage hit Puerto Rico on New Year's Eve, leaving over 1.3 million customers without electricity. The blackout, caused by a fault in an underground power line, affected nearly 90% of the island’s clients. Luma Energy, responsible for power transmission and distribution, estimates it will take up to 48 hours to restore power. Puerto Rico’s power grid, weakened by Hurricane Maria in 2017, continues to face maintenance and investment challenges, leading to frequent outages.
