India updates prison guidelines to end caste-based discrimination, per Supreme Court ruling.

The Indian Home Ministry has updated prison guidelines to stop caste-based discrimination, following a Supreme Court ruling. The new rules in the Model Prison Manual and related act prohibit segregating prisoners by caste and extend protections against manual scavenging to inmates. The Ministry instructed all states to remove references to habitual offenders, particularly those affecting de-notified tribes, from their manuals.
