Illinois tightens "Move Over" law, adding digital alerts and steeper fines to boost road safety.

Illinois is enhancing its "Move Over" law, or Scott's Law, effective January 1, 2025, to improve road safety. The updated law requires drivers to slow down and move over when approaching emergency or stationary vehicles and construction zones. This follows the death of Trooper Clay Carns and 25 incidents of Illinois State Police vehicles being hit in 2024. The state is also partnering with technology companies to send digital alerts about roadside emergencies to certain vehicle brands. Violations can lead to fines of $250 to $10,000 and license suspensions.
