Frauds target victims via WhatsApp, stealing over Rs 2 crore through fake stock investment schemes.

In recent incidents, fraudsters have defrauded a Bombay High Court lawyer and a 72-year-old senior citizen from Udupi, Karnataka, of Rs 1.58 crore and Rs 49 lakh, respectively, through fake stock market investments promoted via WhatsApp groups. Both victims were convinced to download fraudulent apps or invest in schemes that promised high returns but resulted in losses. Mumbai cyber police are investigating the growing trend of such scams, with over 1,000 similar cases registered in Mumbai in 2024.
