This marks the first time in recent history that deaths outnumbered births, a trend that began in 2021. The average child-bearing age in B.C. rose to 32.6 years in 2023, above the Canadian average of 31.7. The province recorded 45,998 deaths in 2022, the highest in its history, with 2024 on track to surpass that number.
