Ireland passes new law to increase sentences for hate crimes, targeting various forms of bias.

Ireland has enacted the Criminal Justice (Hate Offences) Act 2024 to combat a rise in hate crimes, increasing prison sentences for offenses motivated by hatred based on race, color, nationality, religion, national or ethnic origin, descent, disability, gender, sex characteristics, and sexual orientation. The new law aims to protect vulnerable communities and fills a gap in Irish legislation, as hate crimes were not previously specifically addressed. Minister for Justice Helen McEntee emphasized the act's intent to deter hate-motivated crimes.
