Irish firefighter wins age discrimination case, awarded €15,000 for contract not renewed at 60.
A Carlow County Council firefighter, Jimmy Murphy, was awarded €15,000 by the Workplace Relations Commission after it ruled that the council discriminated against him based on age. The council refused to extend Murphy's contract beyond age 60, citing the need for firefighters to maintain physical and mental abilities. However, the WRC found that the council did not adequately justify the retirement age.
