Ireland's free contraception program expands, aiming to serve 320,000 people by 2024.
Health Minister Stephen Donnelly announced that Ireland's expanded free contraception scheme is expected to reach 320,000 women by 2024, up from 245,000 people who accessed it from January to September 2023.
Initially for women aged 17-30, the scheme was expanded to include those aged 31-35.
The program provides financial freedom in reproductive health choices and is open to women, girls, and transgender or non-binary individuals who are resident in Ireland and deemed suitable for prescription contraception by their doctors.
It is supported by over 2,400 GPs and 2,050 pharmacies.
