Astronomer Alan Fitzsimmons joins ESA's Hera mission to study asteroid deflection techniques.
An astronomer from Belfast, Professor Alan Fitzsimmons, is involved in the ESA's Hera mission, launched to gather data on deflecting asteroids. The mission aims to measure the impact of NASA's DART on the asteroid Dimorphos and test techniques like kinetic impact and gravity tractor to potentially prevent future asteroid collisions with Earth. Hera will use Mars' gravity to reach the asteroid in 2026.
