Japan's 2024 average temperature is on track to break records for the second year, fueled by global warming.

Japan is on track to break its average temperature record for the second year in a row, with the 2024 average through November 1.64 degrees Celsius above the long-term norm. The Japan Meteorological Agency attributes the rise to warmer air currents and global warming. This would make 2019-2023 the hottest five-year period on record since 1898. Sea surface temperatures around Japan also hit a new high, up 1.46 degrees Celsius as of late November.
