Sudbury's Giving Tree initiative marks 50 years of providing Christmas gifts to Kirkwood residents.
The Giving Tree initiative at Our Lady of Hope Parish in Sudbury, Canada, celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.
Started in 1971 by Josie McLaughlin, the project provides gifts for residents of Kirkwood, formerly known as Sudbury Algoma Sanatorium.
McLaughlin and her friends initially collected 35 gifts, using repurposed Christmas cards as gift tags.
The initiative has grown significantly, with up to 700 gifts collected annually.
Father Ramesh Christy, the parish priest, commends the parishioners' generosity and encourages them to continue the tradition.
