New Zealand launches $12,000 "Fees Free" program for final year of tertiary studies starting 2025.

Starting January 1, 2025, New Zealand will introduce a new "Fees Free" program for first-time tertiary students, offering up to $12,000 for the final year of their studies or the last two years of work-based learning. This replaces the existing first-year fee waiver scheme. The new policy, approved by Cabinet in April 2024, aims to reward student dedication and completion of qualifications. Payments will be made after completing the first qualification or program, with the first payments available in 2026 for studies completed in 2025. The Tertiary Education Commission and Inland Revenue will manage the implementation.
