A Malaysian man was publicly caned for close contact with a woman, sparking human rights concerns.

A 42-year-old Malaysian carpenter, Mohd Affendi Awang, was publicly caned in Terengganu for the Islamic crime of close proximity with a non-family member of the opposite sex, known as "khalwat." This was his third conviction, leading to a six-stroke caning under stricter Islamic law. The state, governed by Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS), faced criticism from the Human Rights Commission for undermining human rights and dignity.
